Grouch 2016

Grouch is only made in years where long ripening can provide intense flavours, structure and complexity. Syrah is co-fermented with some Marsanne, creating a powerful savoury wine reminiscent of Hermitage. The wine can be enjoyed now (long decanting is recommended) but will continue to please for many years.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Deep purple

Aroma: The nose is a juxtaposition of intensely concentrated dark fruit with complex notes of almond, fennel and earth opening to show red fruits and sweet spice.

Palate: The wine is brooding and complex with layered dark fruit, almond meal, herbal and mineral characters. Fine savoury tannins combine with bright acidity to underpin a powerfully prolonged finish.

Closure: Diam

Technical Notes

Select bunches of Syrah was sourced from our west facing block and co-fermented with Marsanne (6%) from the Rhône block. The Marsanne was crushed and its stalks retained, before being added to the crushed and destemmed Syrah. The wine was inoculated with cultured yeast and fermentation took place in small open top fermenters. Once Fermentation was complete, the must was pressed off
and the wine was transferred to the cellar for 12 months maturation in neutral french oak barriques. After two rackings, the wine was bottled without fining or filtration.
