Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre 2017

$55.00

A classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape blend (Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre) with a tiny addition of co-fermented Muscat of Alexandria. This wine is consistently rated amongst the best in Australia of its class, and truly demonstrates the potential of the Yarra Valley for producing elegant Rhône style wines.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Purple

Aroma: The nose is tight, dark and brooding, requiring some coaxing but eventually revealing layers of dark bramble fruits, red liquorice and subtle hints of citrus.

Palate: The palate too is dark and initially closed, but with time shows extravagantly lush and full with complex savoury character. A juxtaposition of game meats and spiced stewed berries evolving to summer pudding. The palate is long and ever-evolving, supported by incredible acidity.

Closure: Diam

Technical Notes

Grenache (48%) Shiraz (29%) and Mourvèdre (22%) were sourced from our Rhône plantings. A tiny quantity of Muscat of Alexandria (>1%) was co-fermented with the Grenache. All varietals were harvested upon reaching phenolic ripeness late in the season and cropped at 1.7 tonnes to the acre. Grenache-Muscat, Syrah and Mourvèdre were all fermented separately in our small open top fermenters using a range of yeast strains including 30% wild. A large portion of the wine was allowed to soak on skins for a further 20 days after fermentation. The wine was aged in a selection of second and third use French oak barriques for 18 months prior to bottling without fining or filtration.
