Marsanne 2019

$80.00

|Limited Release|

The legacy of Marsanne in the Yarra Valley and across Victoria is well established for its cellar-worthiness, but equally acclaimed for its interest and charm as a young white wine. Styled on White Hermitage, in France’s Northern Rhône, this wine embodies the subtlety, charm and superb potential of this long-ageing variety. Produced only in exceptional years, this second release is again in very limited supply. Less than 300 bottles made.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Light straw

Aroma: Fresh varietal aromas of baked apple, Bosch pear, leatherwood honey, lemon curd, and white stone fruit are mingled with soft sweet spices, ginger, honey, and white flowers. Secondary aromas from skin- and lees- contact are subtle in this youthful wine.

Palate: Medium-bodied and finely textured, with rich stone fruit, honeysuckle and sweet spice flavours. Elegant and mouth-filling fruit characters are complimented by bright natural acid drive and subtle phenolics from early lees contact and oak maturation. The powerful and refined, long and textured finish demands cellaring time to deliver its potential, but the hallmark nutty and creamy elements that are emerging make this wine very easy to enjoy now.

Technical Notes

In 2009, our Marsanne was planted in a single block with rows facing north and sloping slightly to the northwest. These ultra-low yielding vines cropped at a tiny 1.0 tonne per acre. With superb fruit-quality, winemaking processes were intentionally simple to respect the potential of this wine. Hand-harvested whole bunches were lightly crushed and allowed brief skin and stalk contact to provide structural and aromatic complexity. After basket pressing, the juice was run to tank with all solids retained, and inoculated with cultured yeast. The wine was gravity-fed to barrel to complete fermentation: a single one-year-old French barrique. The wine was matured on all solids with light stirring and spontaneous MLF to develop complexity. After 20-months in barrel, the wine was twice-racked off lees via gravity, the Marsanne was bottled without fining or filtration (DIAM closure).
