Shiraz 2019 – A22 Member Release

$65.00

Ideal ripening conditions in 2019 allowed us to carefully and selectively harvest our close-grown Shiraz block over the course of several weeks. Planted in 2003, these low-yield vines were harvested in mid- to late- March, and provided pristine fruit quality of intense flavour concentration and structural poise to create three distinct Shiraz styles for the 2019 vintage. This first Shiraz embodies the intensity, refinement and deliciousness of cool-climate grown fruit.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Deep garnet

Aroma: The intensely perfumed nose shows immediate varietal aromas, with a melange of red and dark fruits, lifted florals, and darker savoury notes of cedar, lapsang, aniseed, tobacco and kombu.

Palate: The flavours transfer to the palate with restraint and persistence in this medium-bodied wine. The powerful, long and complex fruit elements combine with fresh acidity, and complement the savoury tannin structure developed from cellaring in select French barriques.

Closure: Diam

Technical Notes

The grapes were sourced from close-planted dry-grown vines on our west sloping block which cropped at 1.5 tonnes per acre. Hand-picked and sorted bunches were destemmed and partially crushed for fermentation in small, open-top, stainless-steel fermenters. Fermentation was completed by wild and inoculated yeast strains. Most ferments were whole-berry, with a small portion of Viognier (less than 2%) and hand-selected ripe stalks being reintroduced to some vats for added spice and aromatic lift. Some vats also received extended maceration before pressing (total time on skins, up to 30 days), to develop tannin structure. Basket-pressed wine was directly transferred to barrel (gravity-fed) for spontaneous MLF and maturation over 18 months. Barrels were mix of French oak barriques (30% new) and puncheons (one year and older), from various coopers. The wine was racked twice before bottling without fining or filtration (DIAM closure).
