Smiths Gully Syrah 2020

Lean, brooding and layered with spice: this 2020 Syrah from Smith’s Gully shows off a cooler climate site, revealing the variety’s more savoury side.

Tasting Notes

Deeply coloured and inky dark, a bouquet of dark berry fruit, freshly cracked pepper and pencil shavings rises from the glass. The palate is supple yet mouth filling, layered with red and black berry fruit, blood orange pith and fine-grained tannins that give way to a long, peppery finish. Initially quite savoury on first pour, there is notable evolution and harmony between texture and flavour with time in the glass. An elegant, spicy Syrah that will continue to develop over the next 5+ years.

Serving Suggestion: Serve at room temperature. Decant prior to drinking to enhance integration of fruit, spice and structure.

Technical Notes

Fruit was hand-picked and fermented in open top stainless-steel vats with a mix of crushed and whole berry fruit. After fermentation, the wine was basket-pressed and transferred by gravity to barrel for maturation in a single one-year-old puncheon for 36 months. No fining or filtration.
