Syrah 2017

$50.00

Absolutely perfect ripening conditions allowed us to slowly, and very selectively, harvest our close-grown Syrah/Shiraz block over the course of almost 4 weeks. The Syrah 2017 (co-fermented with a small portion of Viognier) represents grapes harvested in some of the first few passes of the block, and for that, is the most spectacularly perfumed, elegant and lively of our 2017 Syrah range.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Purple

Aroma: The nose shows bright and clear, bursting with cherries, raspberries and chocolate evolving to cured meats, clove and fragrant orange.

Palate: The aroma is reflected through the palate with subtle hints of peach and violets. While being delightfully lush and elegant this wine hides some deceptively powerful tight dark tannins. Ultimately, however, the palate is like silk and leads to a long clean finish.

Closure: Diam

Technical Notes

The Syrah was sourced from close planted vines on our west sloping block which cropped at 2 tonnes to the acre. Following destemming a combination of crushed and whole-berry fermentations were employed in micro batches (0.5-0.8 tonne). This combination of ferments provided some bright fruit expression whilst imbuing rich, rounded textural feel. A small quantity of Viognier pressings (roughly 3%) were simultaneously introduced to the pots for added aromatic lift. Following fermentation with cultured yeast, the wine was transferred to the cellar for maturation in elegant French and Hungarian barrels, predominantly French and 30% new. The wine was matured for 18 months before bottled without fining or filtration.
